Urgent Appeal for Support for the Typhoon Mario (Fung-Wong) affected communities

 20 September 2014

Dear friends,

 Greetings of peace and solidarity!

Tropical storm Mario (international name Fung-Wong) worsened torrential monsoon rains and caused heavy flooding in Metro Manila, Southern Luzon and Central Luzon yesterday.

According to government reports, almost 500,000 people are affected and almost 40,000 are displaced. A 2-year old girl died because of drowning in Barangay Bagong Silangan, Quezon City.

Reminiscent of typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) which happened in 2009, the Marikina river reached a 19.9 level high while nearby communities were submerged in water. The local government declared that almost 20% of the city’s population were affected.

 Once again, affected families swarmed public schools turned evacuation centers, with little food, potable water, limited access to toilets and exposure to various possible illnesses. During times of disasters, women and children are the most affected.

Again, the Task Force Children of the Storm (TFCOS), a consortium of five (5) non-government organizations based in Quezon City and Marikina City, is knocking on your kind hearts. The affected families, especially women and children are in dire need of your support. We need more support in the form of cash and in kind donations to be able to give flood affected families the following:

  1. Food Items: Rice, Canned Goods, Dried Fish, Noodles, Cooking Oil, Salt, Sugar, Coffee etc.;
  2. Potable water;
  3. Sanitary and personal hygiene needs: toilet paper, sanitary napkins, diaper, laundry soap, bath soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush;
  4. Medical needs: alcohol, bandages, povidine, medicine for cough, colds, fever, diarrhea, pain reliever and antibiotics for both children and adults;
  5. Beddings: blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats.

Aside from these items, we also count on your tireless volunteerism to help us gather, package and deliver the relief goods. TFCOS also needs volunteers for health missions and psycho social first aid which are planned to be implemented in the coming weeks.

For cash donations, you can deposit directly to our bank account:
