Child Rights group condemns the killing of tagged NPA child warrior’s father

Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC) out rightly condemns the killing of Gregorio Galacio by alleged state agents in their house in Brgy.  Kahayag, New Bataan, Compostela Valley last July 19, 2014.

Tatay Gorio during Grecil Campaign in 2007

Galacio, or “Tatay Gorio” to his loved ones and neighbors, is the father of Grecil Buya, the 9-year old girl who was killed last March 31, 2007 by the 28th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army while she was taking a bath with her brother in the stream nearby their house. Later in a statement, the military tagged Grecil as an NPA child soldier who was allegedly holding an M-16 rifle, making her a legitimate target during the said operations. However, the military was later forced to retract this malicious accusation after they were met with massive condemnation from local and international child-focused and human rights organizations.

Jacquiline Ruiz, executive director of CRC said that “For 7 years, Tatay Gorio have longed for justice for her daughter’s death. His family’s cry for justice will now be even louder as another state-sponsored killing has taken over their family.”

Tatay Gorio was an ardent advocate for justice, not only for his daughter but to all victims of human rights violations. His death will be another case of extra-judicial killing of human rights advocates that will be lined up together with over a thousand of politically-motivated killings during the Arroyo and now Aquino administration that have eluded the wheels of justice.

“Tatay Gorio was the family’s breadwinner. His death will pose another setback for his wife and three other kids that he left behind. Aside from overcoming the grief over yet another killing of a loved-one, the family’s economic capacity will also be gravely affected,” said Ruiz.

“The Aquino government’s blatant disregard on human rights brings him to the persecution of the people. In his four years in office, he has proven through his blood-stained record that his government should be put to an end,” Ruiz ended. ##
